The Ambassador Modern Mystery Quiltalong (digital)

The Ambassador quilt pattern creates a 49” x 49” wall hanging or a 98” x 98” queen-sized quilt (approximate sizes.)

You’ve been appointed the ambassador to Polychromia, a remote archipelago of 5 islands with a colorful history. Vacationers and anthropologists alike flock to Polychromia to enjoy its pristine beaches, diverse ecosystems, tropical climate and complex language. As ambassador your job will be to maintain positive relations between your country and Polychromia’s elders as well as to participate in various local events. There’s a tradition among ambassadors to Polychromia that each ambassador creates their own small embassy flag and ceremonial quilt to present to the elder council. Bill and Weeks are in charge of your transition and will ensure that everything goes smoothly. You can watch this preview video to learn more.

FABRIC SELECTION and REQUIREMENTS

The 49″ x 49″ Ambassador wall quilt requires one Ambassador kit or:

• 23 Fat Quarters in a range of hues and values
• 3/4 yard background fabric
• 1/2 yard binding fabric
• 3 yards backing fabric
• 53” x 53” batting

The 98″ x 98″ Ambassador queen quilt requires four Ambassador kits or:

• 23—1-yard pieces of fabric in a range of hues and values. (Yes, this is a lot! Each person will use different amounts of different fabrics, so we can’t predict which ones you’ll need a full yard of. The good news is you’re likely to have enough extra to make a great pieced backing for the quilt.)
• 2 1/2 yards background fabric
• 1 yard binding fabric
• 9 yards backing fabric
• 102” x 102” batting

We offer two kit options, both using fabrics from Moda’s Grunge line. Grunge fabrics are known for their mottled appearance with subtle color variations throughout the yardage. VANILLA KIT: SOLD OUT. This option has a Vanilla background and Tan binding. ONYX KIT: SOLD OUT This option features both Onyx background and binding. Backing fabric can be purchased separately. We will be using the Vanilla kit during the Quiltalong.

The Ambassador kit (Vanilla or Onyx) is ideal but not required. If you’d like to assemble your own fabrics, select 23 fabrics in a range of hues and values such that any two of the fabrics have some contrast. Avoid extreme value differences (very light or very dark.) The background fabric should contrast with all 23 fabrics. We recommend using either small-scale prints or solids if you’re not using an Ambassador kit. Mixing solids and prints can be tricky especially in mystery quilts. This pattern doesn’t lend itself to large-scale or high-contrast prints.

There will be opportunities to make individual choices during the quiltalong, so no two quilts will be identical, even for those using either Ambassador Kit. Watch the preview video for additional fabric-selection advice before choosing your own fabrics.

Access to the Pattern / How this Quiltalong Works

Through a series of six installments Bill and Weeks will lead you through your duties as the new ambassador to Polychromia. All details for this quiltalong, including links to download the six individual assignments and view the supporting videos, are posted on a secret webpage available to you after your purchase of this quiltalong.

This is a fully digital quiltalong, no printed pattern will be mailed to you and no additional emails will be sent. Use your original receipt with its essential download link to the portal where you’ll access everything for the duration of the quiltalong.

• The one-time cost of $35 includes all instructions and access to video tutorials
• There are two sizes, a 49″ x 49″ wall quilt (what we’re making) and a 99″ x 99″ queen variation suitable for adventurous beginners to experienced quilters (sizes are approximate)
• Your pattern and video access will continue to be available for at least a year after the date of purchase.

IMPORTANT: After purchase, our system automatically emails you a receipt. If you don’t see your receipt in your inbox, check your junk mail folder. The receipt has a link that says “CLICK HERE to download the Embassy Guide to your device.” Click that link and download your guide promptly. You have 60 days from the purchase date to download the guide before the link expires. The guide provides ongoing access to the quiltalong once you have it, so print and keep it in a safe place. We cannot resend expired links or replace lost guides.

The pdf Guide provides all the information needed to access the quiltalong’s secret webpage called The Embassy. The Embassy page will have links to download the six installments, links to video tutorials, a Spotify playlist and more. The Embassy is a private page. Please do not share links to the page, the downloads or videos. After you’ve downloaded and printed the Embassy Guide you won’t need the download link from your purchase again.
